| 授業目的 / Course Objectives |
| This course aims to improve students' reading ability. In this semester, the theme is 'description' and 'reason'. During this course, students are expected to improve basic reading comprehension skills required to read descriptive and reasoning type passages written for scientific readers. Students will learn how sentences are connected and organized, how to find main ideas, how to identify key words/sentences, and how to scan for necessary information. The course features both intensive reading (reading slowly and carefully) and extensive reading (reading a lot without worrying about the details). By doing extensive reading, students are trained to read without depending on Japanese translation. |

| At the end of the semester, students should be able to understand how sentences are connected and organized, how to find main ideas, how to identify key words/sentences, and how to scan for necessary information. During this course, students shoud be able to improve basic reading comprehension skills required to read descriptive and reasoning type of passages written for scientific readers. Students should also gain up to 750 basic English vocabulary. |

| Although this course is taught by a teacher different from Writing/Communication, this course is one of the three courses of freshman English and will be closely connected with the other two courses in many ways. Doing well in this course will help the other two classes and vice versa. Come to every class well prepared and actively participate in class activities. |

Students will read 9 units out ou the textbook in this semester. In each leson, one unit
is read. A vocabulary quiz is given each month (three times in total) The following are the descriptions of the activities featured in this course. 1) Improving reading skills in order to comprehend descriptive and reasoning type passages. Understanding how sentences are organized mainly at the paragraph level for descriptive and reasoning type passages. 2) Improving strategic reading skills: Identifying main ideas, identifying key words, and scanning & skimming. 3) Improving reading fluency (Extensive reading) 4) Improving reading accuracy (Vocabulary and grammatical knowledge) |

定期試験(Final examination)
Evaluation will be based upon everyday work (30%) and the final examination (70%). Everyday work includes extensive reading assignments, Vocabulary quizzes and others. Class participation and various activities in class also count toward everyday work evaluation. Students need to get 60% or higher in order to pass this course. However, both students who get less then 60% on the vocabulary quizzes are subject to fail this course even if they get more than 60% on the total scores of the course. |
