講義目的 Course Objectives
Reading IIB is a one-unit required English course that is offered in the Fall term concurrently with two other required second-year English courses, Writing IIB and Communication IIB. Although Reading IIB meets once per week, students will be encouraged by the instructor to integrate vocabulary and content material learned in this course with their Writing IIB and Communication IIB courses when possible. Overall, this course will help students build on basic reading comprehension skills previously learned, read faster, and learn how to read for pleasure.
各回ごとの授業内容 Course Contents of Each Session
By the end of the course, students should be able to utilize a combination of reading comprehension skills to quickly make sense of challenging TOEFL and TOEIC passages and other reading material. During the course, students will also work with timed reading techniques to help them read faster, test-taking strategies that can be employed on TOEFL, TOEIC, and similar exams, and extensive reading activities, games, and puzzles designed to encourage reading for pleasure and making daily reading a habit.
授業方法 Methods of Instruction
This will be a 90-minute workshop-based class in which the teacher will give clear instruction and guidance in English while students read and analyze written material on scientific and other topics. This course approaches reading from a skill-based perspective.

Students will receive materials from the instructor in class.
成績評価方法・基準 Methods and Criteria of Evaluation
Students must earn a grade of at least 60% to pass this course. This grade will be based on in-class quizzes(35%), TOEFL exam performance, 1 final exam(30%), book project tests (25%)and other instructor-determined coursework(10%). Detailed information will be provided in class by the instructor.

There are no prerequisites for this course. However, in general, students are expected to have mastered the material taught in Reading IIA before taking this course. Some of the course topics and materials will connect to topics and materials in Writing IIB and Communication IIB. Students should plan to set aside two hours minimum a week for homework in this class and invest in a good electronic dictionary.
