講義目的 Course Objectives
Reading IIA is a one-unit required English course that is offered in the Spring term concurrently with two other required second-year English courses, Writing IIA and Communication IIA. Although Reading IIA meets once per week, students will be encouraged by the instructor to integrate vocabulary and content material learned in this course with their Writing IIA and Communication IIA courses when possible. Overall, this course will help students build on basic reading comprehension skills previously learned, read faster, and learn how to read for pleasure.
各回ごとの授業内容 Course Contents of Each Session
By the end of the course, students should be able to utilize the following reading comprehension skills: skimming for stated main ideas, scanning for key words and concepts, identifying word parts, identifying stated and implied main ideas, and understanding inferences. During the course, students will also be introduced to timed reading techniques to help them learn how to read faster, test-taking strategies that can be employed on TOEFL, TOEIC, and similar exams, and extensive reading activities, games, and puzzles designed to encourage reading for pleasure and making daily reading a habit.

The first part of the course will focus on word parts and patterns of organization, the second part of the course will focusing on word parts and implied main ideas, and the third part of the course will focus on word parts and inferences.

This will be a 90-minute workshop-based class in which the teacher will give clear instruction and guidance in English while students read and analyze written material on scientific and other topics. This course approaches reading from a skill-based perspective

成績評価方法・基準 Methods and Criteria of Evaluation
Students must earn a grade of at least 60% to pass this course. This grade will be based on in-class quizzes (40%), 1 final exam(25%), class book projects(25%), vocabulary log/notebooks(10%) and other instructor-determined coursework related to helping students meet the objectives of Reading IIA. Class participation is a must and students will also be evaluated on attendance. Students will receive a detailed class outline in class.

There are no prerequisites for this course. However, in general, students are expected to have mastered the material taught in Reading IA and IB before taking this course. Some of the course topics and materials will connect to topics and materials in Writing IIA and Communication IIA. Students should plan to set aside two hours minimum a week for homework in this class and invest in a good electronic dictionary.
